FIGURES OF SPEECH IN FASHION: ANTITHESIS


A concept formed by adding the negation of its opposite (he used to work at night, not during daytime) or by combining two opposite words or concepts (I fear and I hope).

In the first image the antithesis between the naked men and the women dressed proposed by Dolce & Gabbana.


A coloured woman breast feeds a snow white baby. The visual contrast of Benetton advertising creates an antithesis.


Benetton, created another anthitesis with the release of its 1991 ‘Devil and Angel’ advert. The print ad, created by Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani, portrays two young girls in what can be said to be a friendly embrace. The blonde, curly haired girl has rosy cheeks resembling an angel. The African-American boy has little expression on his face, with his hair shaped into devil horns.

The antithesis of the surgeon with loose hair and assistants with headgear proposed by Pantene.
